Here's the article:
"There is a reason why more and more joggers have been taking to the downtown streets of Clarksdale in recent weeks and it sure is a good one.
Training to compete in the St. Jude’s Memphis Marathon this December, the runners are members of a team currently being formed to honor the memory of Alexa Cooke, shown left, a former Lee Academy student who succumbed to a battle with Osteosarcoma bone cancer in May 2005.Now, in what would be the middle of her senior year, Alexa’s parents Steve and Ginger Cooke along with others in the community, are organizing the team in hopes of reaching a fundraising goal for St. Jude’s of $25,000 between now and the date of the marathon Dec. 6.Ginger says there are currently over 50 members signed and she hopes more join before the race reaches the cutoff maximum capacity of 13,000 participants.Alexa’s mother stresses the work being done into cancer research and treatment by St. Jude’s is among the best in the world and needs the continued financial support through fundraisers such as the marathon.
“I can’t say enough about what St. Judes does. As unbearable as it was with what happened to Alexa, they took care of everything. There was so much oversight on her disease and nothing went unchecked or was not taken care of,” Cooke said. One member of the team is Ashlyn Jones, a senior at Lee who was one of Alexa’s best friends in the years leading up to her death.Jones says she went to school with Alexa through St. George’s Episcopal Day School, but really became close to her classmate when they transitioned to Lee their seventh grade year.“We hung out alot and had a whole lot in common,” Jones said. “We would do things like go to Ole Miss ball games with our families and we always would get together and bake. It is still really hard for me.”
As tough as Alexa’s friend admits it is for her to think back on what happened, she hopes running in the marathon will ensure that Alexa’s life and the courageous way she handled her disease will continue to be remembered by the Clarksdale community. “We just want everybody to remember her and what she was all about. She was always positive throughout it all and showed the strength that alot of adults probably would not have had,” Jones said. “I can’t even imagine what she went through being as young as she was. We always kept her in our prayers, but I guess God just had different plans.” Alexa was initially diagnosed with bone cancer in her seventh grade year and died on May 14, 2005 after 17 rounds of chemotherapy and 6 surgeries. Osteosarcoma is the most common type of malignant bone cancer, accounting for 35 percent of primary bone malignancies. It reportedly effects some 400 children under age 20 and 500 adults every year in the U.S.Participants in the St. Jude race can either sign up for the marathon, half-marathon or 5 K. For those just wishing to donate money to “Alexa’s Team” they can either donate online or send checks payable to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to Ginger Cooke, P.O. Box 156 Dublin, MS, 38739.
Ginger also says local attorney Tom Ross is one of those spearheading the teams organization and can be contacted for more information on the race itself."
